Thing 23 - Ha! Ha!

Well! I did it. I have found lots of interesting information along the way. Not I can say I can remember how to use them again but basically I know the "name" and have experience with Web. 2.0. In future, I will use them and explore them again to provide better service to our customers.

I enjoy searching for new things and discovering useful and interesting stuff, but it is a bit hard for a part time staff as me, too much learning within one week and we have not enough time It was a "pressure". Exercises should spread in longer span of time, e.g. one task per week.

Anyway, I have completed the program!!!

Thing 22

"eBooks - netLibrary" - this is the best tool I can do easily because I am familiar with it. I use it very often. I recommend it to most Intermediate student patron for their studies through our ACL digital Library, specially Cliff notes on Shakespeare studies. ACL collection is enormous and powerful (773 titles) and the search is not hard and rather user friendly.

It sounds great for Amazon wireless electronic book reader "kindle", but reading for relax, I still prefer to have a book on hand.

Thing 21

"Podcast" - I was keen to give this a go and once I spent nearly two hours on this. I was a bit disappointed. I searched "book review" and " library news" through "Podcast.net", "Podcastally.com" and "Yahoo Podcasts", the results were most came from America. End up I tried International Podcasts on "Podcast.net", I got a title called "Tofupod" and added the RSS feed to my Bloglines account. It was just for fun.

Thing 19

Played around with the Web 2.0 tool "upcoming event". It shows me what the upcoming events are for Auckland, or where I live. Very easy to use and very informative. I can add my own events publicly so that everyone can see or I can add events to remind me or my friends.

The useful features of the site is that I can see events based on my location. Help keep track of what is happening as I usually forget or don't know about these events.

I can see it being very useful for library to have an event page, displaying what is happening at your library. It could also be used to display new books arriving at the library.

Thing 20

It is very interesting, like watching tv. Lots of shows I can watch when I want to. Can also see videos made by or taken by other people, such as their pets (especially the video below), holidays. Good thing is there are no advertisements : ).

It will help the library by displaying documentary or children education related videos so that children can watch and be entertained or even help them with their homework.

"reminder" Thing 18

Ha!Ha! I did it. Created account with Zoho Writer, created a document "Reminder" and used Zoho's publish option to post the document to my Blog........ I did it!!!

One funny thing that... when I tried to use Zoho Writer's spell check, the message came out "spell check is not supported for English..." What language they are using?? I needed to change to "English NZ" from drop down Manuel and it worked.

Thing 17

Finally, I did it!!!
I tried several times to get the link to my blog to work properly, following the instructions but it did not work. I noticed that there was a link in the top right hand corner that said "switch to classic mode". When I clicked on this it changed to a different editing mode, the language I did not know. So I clicked back to the "Edit page" and tried again, it worked this time.
Through the "PB Wiki Tour", I got the clear idea of it. It does not look hard to do. I will try if I have time later.

#16 (week 7)

"A wiki is a collaborative website and authoring tool that allows users to easily add, remove and edit content" It is great !!
Looked at some library wikis and blogs, I like Wiki "Library Success" which was created to be a one-stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians. I like that ideas -- sharing information about the profession.
Book Lovers Wiki was great too -- looked at the difference types of reviews - it is good guidelines for patron and librarian.
Only one thing, will that be easy to work on and meet the purpose it serve.

Thing 15

I agreed that we librarians are working hard, with the best intentions, to serve our patrons well in a world that has changed dramatically in the last decade. In a new digital lifestyle, Library 2.0 makes the library a social and emotionally engaging center for learning and experience. Our patrons will expect access to everything - digital collections of journals, books, blogs, podcasts, etc. I don't think there's any question that we'll help and educate patrons when we can.
The problem is as more information becomes more accessible, people will still need experienced tour guides. This will be the main challenging for librarian to be a good tour guide to access right information for patron.

#14 (week 6)

"Today, the blogosphere is doubling in size every 200 days, or about once every 6 and a half months." I think the growing of blogosphere is getting bigger and bigger, faster and faster as long as people getting to know "blogging"!!!
Tried a keyword search for "Learning 2.0" under Technorati, 510 results found and after searched under tags, 107 results found.

#13 (week 6)

Read through the notes and had a look of "Del.icio.us" - looked at PLCMCL2 account, read the links and found one of the bookmark called "The shifted librarian: libraries with RSS from the catalog (save this library catalogs with RSS feeds), that was interesting.
Yes, if we have different workstations, it is good to have all our favourites links in one social bookmarking manager as "Del.icio.us" and discover quickly other websites that may be of interest to us.

Thing 12

Easy to create an account with Rollyo and successfully create a search roll for "Chinese food"-

http://www.rollyo.com/maduckie/
Did some search and it was fun to create my own search engine with Rollyo.
The point is that I need time to explore a group of websites that are my favourites and they are the best for my special topic.
Anyway, I enjoyed to learn something new!!!

Thing 11

http://www.librarything.com/catalog/maduckie
"Library Thing" was not hard to use and the explanation (tour) was easy to follow.
It was easy to add books to the list, but not all the books, specially other language books.
I don't think I will use it for my online catalog. It is only for learning/knowing.

thing 10

I used this site http://www.ezsmiley.com/ to create my funny face. It was simple and easy. I tried some other generators, they were too hard for me.
Just under "The Generator Blog", it contains heaps of generators, it is fun but needs time to explore them.

#9 (week 4)

Tried couple favourite websites, it was not easy to find the "feed icons". It was not easy to recognize where RSS feeds are. Should have something easy to follow and subscribe.

Tried Feedster, it did not work. Topix.net seemed much user friendly.

I know I can add more Feeds to my Bloglines account that would help me to save the time for recognized the new coming news. But I still prefer to visit my favourite websites under my "favorites" that is much easy and mush user friendly.

Thing 8

Is it true to make life "really simple" with RSS & news reader? My answer is "no".

Followed the program, I created a free online Bloglines account and subscribed 10 news feeds. Information is overloaded!!! I used "favorites" to record my favourite sites. It was much easy.

I understand "RSS and newsreaders" might be good for some professional or companies but not for me. I still prefer "as simple as possible".

Anyway, I found that the notes on ACL learning 2.0 was not easy to follow and very confusion.

Took an hour, I still could not link my bloglines account.
